I get that, but if killing off/harvesting at 85% maturity allows for a second planting to be harvested at 60 %, that's a gain?

As a general rule, the best feed is the one you can reasonably expect to pick up any day and be fresh (some exceptions). With a quality feed and your run area and bugs and such, you can expect your eggs to be much better than any store bought.
She is wrong. I have one pullet (hen next month) that escapes the run near daily. She is underweight and likely malnourished. This is in a much more favorable environment than yours. She still lays good eggs tho.
